You’ve heard the story. ‘Borderland is one week of breathing. The rest of the year is about not drowning’. How do we practice and co-create more wholehearted ways of living, all year around? That's the core question at our miniature spiritual centre.
Deep in the heart of the forests of Östergötland (Sweden), lies a small burner-community-based DIY-monastery; Kinäs Kloster. This year the monastery comes to Borderland. The idea came about after walking around, seeing and talking to people at last year’s Borderland. Hearing many versions of the same theme: For one week of the year, coming up to the surface to breathe, while the rest of the year feels like just trying not to drown in the deep waters of default world life. For many of us, Borderland is ultimate freedom. But what do we do with this freedom? What do we do when we’ve spent our Acid Friday in the darkroom of the foxhole? How can we take this freedom and run with it? How can it run deep into our ways of being the rest of that year?
That question seems to be at the core for many of us. Kinäs Kloster takes that question seriously and aims for a spiritual integration between Borderland and the land we inhabit daily. In the monastery you are invited to explore, discuss, practice and co-create ways to immerse in a better, more wholehearted way of living, all year around.
Historically, the monastery has been a place for wayward wanderers and the persecuted. A place for learned discussion. Spiritual practices. Music, food, and community. This particular monastery is run by father superior;Teologen. Teologen left academia after 11 years of theological training to return to his roots, fully intent to revive relevant spirituality for the 21st century. The foremost such spiritual practice is Dancing. On The Sacred Sound System, Teologen will bang out club anthems such as “Akut Nihilism” and “Indoktrinering” (yes, the do exist - look them up on Spotify!).
In the monastery, you will be offered food for the soul and body. Seminars, workshops and musical sessions that revolve around actual change that can happen in your life. Maybe there will be a talk on humour in the bible? (Will that be the shortest talk in history?) How does prayer work – and how is it different from yoga or meditation? Should anyone read the Bible, and if so, why? What is mysticism and why might that be the key to a better life? Is spirituality best performed individually or does it get better (stronger?) if you’re part of a spiritual community? Come and ponder things like that.
Get inspired to infuse some new spirituality into your life. No dogma, no obligations, no musts. See what sticks! For instance, do you want to see how you can integrate things differently after Acid Friday? Maybe experience a deconstructed Sunday mass? Do you want a helping hand, empathy, and deep human connection? Then the monastery is open for you.
The initiative is not tied to any religious organisation, but the background of the monastery’s father superior is best described as mystical atheist christianity. (What that means is a talk in itself.) Please support the monastery with your hearts and we will give you something for your heart in return when we meet!
Visitors will not be given anything that is not eat- or drinkable in their own cups, so no additional moop will be created.
