Digital Mandala Pixel Art is both street lighting, street art, signage, expression and communication.
Digital Mandala is a set of 16x16 or 32x32 pixel individually controllable LEDs, drawable on by any participant. The interface purposefully requires time, patience and investment.
You go up to it. There is light, a pattern, perhaps art, perhaps randomness, perhaps a sign. Do you want to alter it? If yes, turn a knob to select a colour and intensity. Press next. Adjust the colour and intensity of the next pixel. Press next. Repeat. In this way, you can draw whatever you want for the other Borderlings, but only as a meditative journey, by investing at least about 6-10 minutes. Like a Mandala made in sand by a monk, the time invested is part of the finished work. On a more practical level, the art is also street lighting for dark parts of the Borderland. We will leave 2 as permanent art.
Solar powered, if budget allows.
The number of digital mandelas, the size of them, and whether they are grid powered or solar powered depends on the budget allocated.
Smallest viable is to bring only one, only 16x16 pixels, not solar powered - budget DKR600 we pay ourselves.
Largest viable project is to bring 5, all solar powered, and leave two as land art - budget DKR 25000 (the land art ones basically cost all the money, as permanent waterproof steel boxes are a lot more difficult)
Nicolas Padfield and Mads Hobye build large scale interactive fire, water, sound, light art as part of illutron collaborative interactive art collecive
There will be no moop. The thing is self contained, and will be taken with us/left as permanent art.
|ESP32 microcontroller, buttons, knobs, joystick, SD card shield, electronics for each Mandala||1000|
|Battery bank per Mandala - IF solar powered||5000|
|Solar panels for each Mandala - IF solar powered||4000|
|Welded stainless steel boxes, vandal proof knobs and buttons||11000|
|Materials for stake, wires etc.||1000|
|230V power supply and cable per Mandala 250 kr - IF NOT solar powered - looks like they will be solar powered||0|
The thing is for other Borderlings to make art for each other. Please contact us if you want to help us produce them ahead of time.
Hey friend! Welcome to the virtual drawing board of The Borderland. This is the place where we prototype the projects we'll realise during the week in the quarry.
