One of the fundamental parts of Borderland is about sharing. Let us extend this beautiful practice! We offer a safe and inclusive space where you are allowed to explore and stretch the limits of self-expression.

Imagine a beautiful and hand-made crib up in a tree. Up there, during night-time, close friends used to have gatherings. They lit up the place with flashlights under blankets, and they were telling stories to each other from dusk to dawn. You might have seen similar scenarios taking place in movies, then, why don’t we do it more often in real life? From Tuesday 24th to Friday 27th (of July, of course), we provide such a crib, where we embrace the performance of oral essays and multilayered narratives. We simply believe that storytelling offers a unique bond of emancipation between the storyteller and the listeners. We furthermore claim that storytelling is a somewhat lost practise in today’s society, which makes it a part of contemporary radical self-expression.

Topics of the week will be: Body, Fears, Dreams, Mind & Magic.

As we all know, many societies of today have become more and more fixated in, and conditioned by, efficiency. One of the most sadly part of this fact is that your way of thinking, acting and producing are constantly being judged/evaluated by how efficient you are. Oral traditions have accordingly gone through an exhaustive metamorphosis. From being engaged with shared stories and multilayered narratives, humanity has now become constantly involved in a world full of so-called pitches. Such pitches are often quick and sensational, indeed. But, as we all know; they are non-emancipatory and shallow in their core.

We are often told that our society is an “information society”. Though, we hereby rather claim that it has nothing to do with information. The Latin word Informare means, roughly, “combining patterns”. By being surrounded by constant pitching, we are rather inevitably exposed to merely isolated or separated fragments. We lack the tools needed in order to imagine the whole. Simply put, without a holistic and true context, we do not enjoy this often-mentioned information. Pitches are fragments. They are therefore not information, and thereby not true. By acknowledging this fact, we want to tell pitches to get off the pitch (go fuck themselves), and give rebirth to vivid essays and multilayered narratives, that is; storytelling.

We are contributing to the tradition of storytelling by introducing a complementary and safe space for the production of potential multi-layered narratives. Everyone is welcome to playfully expand their stories about something important (or super unimportant) in their lives.

From Tuesday 24th to Friday 27th (still July), our stage will be open two hours per day, whereas our hosts will facilitate for people to share their stories. Each day, at a predestined time, our ceremony horn-blower will blow in a sacred horn from Tobago, made out of a giant Caribbean shell. Listeners, together with potential story-tellers, will then be invited to enter our beautifully constructed constellation, where all stories will take place.

This above-mentioned constellation, as well as the stage inside it, is (accordingly) of main significance for us. It will be characterized by our vision of inclusiveness. We want to create an environment where the oral essays of the participants are supported by (and somewhat coagulated with) the listeners.

    * Anonymity? If people want to share a story, but for some (or many) reasons do not want to do that in person, we of course offer the possibility to represent this anonymous speaker in question.

    * You don’t have a voice? That should of course be no problem! Currently, we are doing the best we can in order to start collaborating with educated sign language interpreters attending the Borderland Festival.

    * Stage fright? If you want to tell your story in person, but are troubled by stage fright, we offer a supporting and loving moderator, who will help you to share your story with the li
