The Space is our awesome Borderland community Heart Space. This year we need your support to expand capacity from 200 to 400- more cosy Workshop/Acoustic/Yoga/cabaret space for the community, beautiful extra sails and a Wizards Hat..
For those new to Borderland, The Space is our main community heart dome, where we meet to listen and be heard, to connect and grow. In the past it has hosted the Borderland opening ceremony, morning meditation, yoga, countless beautiful workshops run by you, and our big Thursday evening cabaret night and party. Its an awesome space because it was designed by and entirely funded by Borderlanders specifically for Borderland, so it reflects our community. Its also fun to build, and pretty beautiful!
So, what’s new for 2016? Last year we found that for big events like the cabaret and even some yoga classes, some people couldn’t get in because The Space was too small to cater for everybody. This year with the doubling of membership we figure we feel we need to expand big time. We thought about just getting a bigger dome but didn’t want to lose the intimate sweetness of the existing space. So a team of us have begun a modular redesign of The Space so that we can keep the intimacy for smaller workshops of 10-50 people, and still expand if necessary to a capacity of 400 for bigger happenings like the Thursday night cabaret party, popular workshops, or acoustic/film nights.
Project 1: The Space Palace
New expanded structure, and canvas sail petals to hold the love and shelter up to 400 Borderlings from wind, rain,.. We’re not talking a few poles and a triangle, our remit is BEAUTY! We’re gonna need lots of metal shit and canvas, and to make it rainproof that needs WORK. We'll need to transport the existing canvas to our friends Nitsan, Lucy and Angelika so they can make the fittings snug. We figure around 7500DKK per extra sail/‘petal’ (including the structure required to support it), and we hope that in 2016 we can add a minimum of 2 sails, up to a maximum of 5 for the complete 360 structure.
Project 2: The Wizards Hat Lighthouse
Last year we had quite a few leaks in heavy rain through our roof. Our solution is our awesome Wizards Hat, which is going to be a see through conical programmable light installation covering the top of the space. It’s part umbrella and part spiritual lighthouse, but it will hopefully be really beautiful and still keep out the rain. It will be a wood, steel and bamboo structure covering the Dome’s existing top hexagon, covered with see-through polythene so the light can shine out. Hopefully you’ll be able to see the glowing morphing cone from all over Borderland.
Project 3: Expanding the Cosmos: The even more awesome Space Chandelier, All new Dadadadadada, and general Kosmosic Space-ification. Our theme this year is “Universal Kosmos”- we’re talking coloured light years away from this Galaxy, so far away that we come back again, Relatively speaking. If you want specifics for this bit, tough, we’re all gonna create something visionary and beautiful together and we need your help to to make distant stars come alive, make beautiful planets ring and limitless sculptures sing OK? Fuck it, we might put a Giraffe in space while we’re at it. Trust us, trust you, its gonna be even more awesome that last year but we need your help to make it happen!
Please consider gifting us 2 grants each or more (and perhaps some of your creative genius) for this 100% community space- much appreciated!
This year we're looking to create a dedicated Space Camp community dedicated to leading the build, magicalising, curating, caring for and nurturing the Space Palace. But we will need the entire Borderland community to make it happen.
We'll have a dedicating team of moopers like last year..
Absolutely, this is YOUR Space. We will need help with the re-design, concept, build, beautification, planning, curating, and teardown. In addition we call on those of you who want to contribute in the form of workshops, yoga, meditation, the cabaret, film night, acoustic gigs. We need all manner of tea makers, beautifiers, angels, riggers, builders, musicians. In short we need you, so please do join us!
Congratulations! You've stumbled upon something special. Borderland is a participatory festival that takes place in Boesdal, Denmark. It's a fully participatory event where everything is created by the participants themselves, with out any spectators.
