Wind and Magic

Summary

"You're on the bluff, overlooking the sea at Boesdal. You smell seaweed. You hear the sound of waves, caressing rocks and flesh alike. The wind is playing with your hair... and powering stuff! [lights and more!]" The sea marvels.

Full description of concept

We'll build and bring a wind-turbine, maybe more, to Borderland, and have it power magic. Certainly lights, maybe some sensors (temperature, humidity), maybe some mechanical things.

The turbine is based off an open-source design: http://solarflower.org/tutorial.php?tut=vawt#.VwwsDHrIMnw
The vision is a beautiful and perhaps funky installation, that gives opportunities for all to learn more on how to harness the wind and use this in a setting like the Borderland and beyond. Specifically for Borderland, wouldn't it be awesome if we could power 100 indepedent light installations without having to wire it all up to the grid? This year, we'll be learning how to reliably power one.

The base of the wind-turbine will be a bike trailer that we build, doubling to solve transportation needs and allowing us to bring with us tools, and - if there's space and if there is interest - materials to build another turbine on site, in a workshop setting.

Size of turbine itself will be roughly 1 meter diameter, 1 meter tall. Who knows how far up we'll mount it; depends on location, too.

Team and plan

So far just me. I'd be very happy to have more people on board.
Currently just myself. Hi! I'm Morten.
I've built turbines a few times before; the challenge is the electrical and having it run consistently for the duration of the Borderland, as well as securing the installation.
I'll start preparing specifically for Borderland in July.

Moop plan (matter out of place)

Some aluminum strips and other leftovers for any on-site construction. Will be taken to metal recycling afterwards.

How can other borderlings cocreate with you?

Join me in July, in my workshop in Copenhagen. We'll prototype and engineer and test lights and other stuff.

What is this?

Congratulations! You've stumbled upon something special. Borderland is a participatory festival that takes place in Boesdal, Denmark. It's a fully participatory event where everything is created by the participants themselves, with out any spectators.

    Details

  • Do you need electricity from the grid? So glad this question is here :)

  • Will there be light? Yes! Wind-powered LEDs!

  • Will anything burn? No burning anticipated.

  • What is your audio footprint? Some rattling in the wind.

  • Forces of nature The turbine(s) are made of mostly aluminum, so for water, no problem. Securing for displacement by wind is a welcome and important challenge, that is due noted.
