Help me decorate a funeral coach Art Car! With gothic aestetics and activities that promote contrasts, differences and challenge the Borderland conventions and conformity, to expand the idea of what is allowed or accepted at Boesdal.
Help me create an Art Car Hearse, a much needed darker element on the playa, which will highlight the necessity of contrasts, the importance of differences and that conventions and conformity can and shall be challenged, especially the conventions that are created in a culture which is built on trying to be un-conventional. We are not only glittery rainbow colored unicorns and we are not always happy and brimming of unconditional love. Many of us have completely different sides that have not been visible at Borderland before. We are also full of differences and contrasts, between each other and within ourselves. Let’s highlight and celebrate that. What is Borderland if not a place to explore things different to the norm?
What will the grant money be used for?
The grant money will only be used for material for decoration and conceptual activities. The car I will be using is an old ambulance that I have already bought and that is not part of this grant application.
These are examples of ideas I have at the moment, some might change before Boesdal (feedback and new ideas are welcome).
I will be decorating and kitting out the car in line with the aesthetic concept. To contrast the very established look of unicorns, rainbows and fluff at Borderland, this art car will sport the much gloomier, darker look of a funeral coach.
I want to furnish the back of the hearse with a bench/sofa to welcome those who want to get involved in the activities of oLikbilen and to create a debate space where people of opposite opinions can meet.
I will also decorate the interior with lights, textile and decorations to set the ambience.
I hope to reconnect the ambulance oxygen supply and connect it to an N20 tank to give people the opportunity to feel completely different in a second.
MissMatchMaking – The opposite of all those apps, sites and algorithms on social networks that try to group you with people just like yourself. We’ll find your least similar borderling, regardless of whether you want a nemesis to battle or an oddball to understand.
- Post a radical idea/opinion that you want to stand for and find someone who takes the opposite side.
- Let people know about something that you really cannot understand, and find someone who will argue for it to give you a different perspective.
- In oLikbilen opposition is welcome and it will be offered as a debate platform where people meet and talk about their differences, publicly or one on one on the couch.
unPimping station – challenge your comfort zone and try being something different than you are. Death metal outfits for sparkle horses, business suits for hippies, dress like the opposite sex, etc.
Workshops/discussions around the topic of differences, conventions, belonging - What differences are really welcome at Borderland? How do we break out of our social media filter bubbles? What contrasts do we appreciate and which ones are less comfortable?
Card games/board games. - I’d like to have some games for people to meet over. Perhaps a version of Pick the odd one out/Spot the difference, where the answer is not necessarily obvious and there is opportunity for discussing why. Also dark/gloomy/contemplative games.
“oLikbilen” is a Swedish play on words. Likbil = hearse/funeral coach. Olik = different, alternative, opposite, contrasting.
Minimal moop risk expected. Everything given out is expected to be handed back (or worst case, stolen/kept).

My knowledge of working on cars is very limited (I've never owned a car before). I would very much appreciate practical help or guidance from anyone who knows cars, car electricity and painting. I'm also looking for garages/spots where I can work on the car (incl painting), so if anyone knows of something like that please get in touch!
Since costumes are not included in grants, I'd happily accept items for the unPimping station, so if you have an old business suit, pretty dresses, hard rock/death metal gear or anything else you can lend or give, please let me know.
I welcome anyone who wants to contribute to the concept in any way. If you have ideas of activities to include and want to co-create these, give me a shout!
Congratulations! You've stumbled upon something special. Borderland is a participatory festival that takes place in Boesdal, Denmark. It's a fully participatory event where everything is created by the participants themselves, with out any spectators.
