Spa Illegal takes away consumerism from what we know as a spa experience and replace with corpse paint, cotton candy and DIY. Just like last year, we will build a salt water pool by the sea. And yes, it will be heated.
This concept was originally created for Borderland 2016 and since we got so much love from all the people that enjoyed a warm bath while looking at the sunset (or at the morning light, if you came late to the party) we obviously want to bring back the heated swimming pool. The pool is 5000 litres, can take about 20 people at the time, and with the help of a stove with wooden logs in it we get the water to a perfect warm temperature. The idea behind the Spa Illegal Movement is to promote alternative spa experiences - where consumerism packaged as oriental wisdom is replaced with pure joy, cold beer, real connection and black metal aestictics. The punk rock angels that manage the spa experience make sure the water is clean (well, at least in the beginning), the fire is safely handled and that everyone get some perks: Drinks, cotton candy and a good DJ-set in the sound system.
Anyone can spontanously join the warm embrace of heated water and splash around with other Borderlanders, and we offer towels and refreshments to everyone.
We started The Spa Illegal Movement for Borderland 2016, and our first installation was the heated swimmingpool "the black cloud". Since then we have made heated pool installations at several festivals and parties. It is a success wherever we go, probably because humanity origins from warm water. And also maybe because we bring cold beverage to the people in the pool.
Pretty much the same team as last year will make this happen, so we know that we can do it well. The pool will be operating at max 3-4 nights of the festival, since it's pretty labour heavy to run the whole setup (change water, oversee the fire in the stove, clean the pool every morning etc).
We will not create any moop, the water is straight from the ocean and will be be put back there, and the wooden logs are burnt in a controlled way.
Buy building material to build a new pool for 5000 litres. Quite a lot of wood to burn in the stove. Rental of cotton candy machine, salt water pump and lights.
Last year we co-created a great combined space with the CANELA BAR team who resided next to the pool. Co-creating a space around the pool this year as well would be awesome - please reach out!
Congratulations! You've stumbled upon something special. Borderland is a participatory festival that takes place in Boesdal, Denmark. It's a fully participatory event where everything is created by the participants themselves, with out any spectators.
