SilentRick - sound with glow to go

Andreas Wolf

100 wireless 3-channel headphones linked up to a rickshaw, transmitting hypnotising sounds to the Borderlings.

Full description of concept

We’ll equip an old bicycle rickshaw with loads of lights, space for 3 sound creators/sources, transmitters and 100 wireless 3-channel headphones.

The headphones receive crystal clear bass-rich sound on up to 3-500m range (we tested them). They play for up to 8 hours, before they need to get recharged again.

When switching between the 3 channels on the headphones, the earcups turn from green, to blue, to red...

We believe that this setup opens for plenty of opportunities:
* games, e.g. remote control a will-less army of Borderlings to play with you 2D real-life space invaders,
* workshops, e.g. a guided meditation on the beach, where the particpants spread out over a long stretch of land, a synchron-sex workshop in the juice bar, an exploration of your senses by receiving guiding instructions
* dance to trance on locations where no sound system can go, e.g. a party down at the beach (the transmitters could send up on the cliff)

Only your fantasy sets boundaries to this dream…

Team and plan

We’re 4 experienced builders located in Copenhagen, who have organised a Silent Disco before (with borrowed equipment) and we dream of taking it for the Borderland to the next level: using the equipment for all kind of amazing events, not only music.

and here is the plan:

End of April: get the Borderland community excited and secure funding; increase the number of headphones by also applying for other cultural grants

Beginning of May: Build a first fast mock-up and test at a local Copenhagen festival

May: assist the Borderland community to incubate several SilentRick parties/workshops/games

June: make more detailed drawings of SilentRick, gather materials and manufacture some of the nitty gritty and important smaller details

1. Half of July: piece it all together

18th of July: ride SilentRick in a rolling bicycle party from Copenhagen down to the Borderland!

Moop plan (matter out of place)

SIlentRick comes as one piece and will hopefully ride in one piece back to Copenhagen.

We’ll expect that wireless headphones MOOPing around in the night eventually find back to us the next morning.

How can other borderlings cocreate with you?

Everyone is welcome to co-create SilentRick’s journey with us!

What is this?

Congratulations! You've stumbled upon something special. Borderland is a participatory festival that takes place in Boesdal, Denmark. It's a fully participatory event where everything is created by the participants themselves, with out any spectators.

  • Do you need electricity from the grid? Charging of the batteries once a day: 4h * 700W = 2.8kWh

  • Will there be light? Ooh my freakin gosh, of course! Lights all over the place! A scenography of people who's heads switch colors: The 100 headphones light up in blue, red or green, while the creatures wearing them swap through the 3 sound channels. And then there’s this sparkling space invader, SilentRick, right in the middle of it all illuminated by LED glow.

  • Will anything burn? Even though SilentRick would look great when breathing out fire beams, we don’t have any plans in that direction.

  • What is your audio footprint? It might happen that people scream/shout/sing along as a reaction to the hypnotising sounds they receive...

  • Forces of nature SilentRick is a heavy fella and his big belly will have enough space to accommodate for the sound/silence equipment in a water-proof way.
